Hi Max.
Welcome to the forum.
I am also a beginner and newbie here.
We all have personal tastes in music but my two favourites to listen and watch! Are Anton Karas who had his own distinctive syle to making the Zither sound beautiful.
The way he used vibrato to give you goose pimples.
Just like Stefan Grapelli who also had an utterly unmistakeable syle on the fiddle.
He warmed the heart.
My other favourite is Cornelia Mayer who plays beautifully.
She KNOWS all about Karas.
You can here him in her hands.
There are also others of course!

If Cornelia Mayer use Vienese tuning ...I do not know but she plays beautifully.
I came across this one!
I keep listening to it again and again.....and again!
So I guess I like it.
Her Rythmn is perfect and she gives it a nice bouncey sound with short staccato on the Boom CHINK CHINKS,
Love this one.

A Master!

Notice how she keeps her left ring finger essentially on or above "b" on the "a" string? Keyes would have loved this.

Notice the tempo! Cornelia holds it to about 64 quarter notes/m for the first part, then "accelerates" to about 70 for the last part. This is a wonderful goal for those learning the broken accompaniment, at which she excels. Get out those metronomes!

Hi Rudi. I'm confoozled again.

Are you talking about the hand position of Cornelia, or of Veronika? Veronika is the zitherist in the video.

Thanks.

I like Christoph Schwarzer's album "Still Pergnügl. Its well-produced, and he takes advantage of the contra bass in a lot of these songs. Of course, all the previous recommendations are also excellent choices.

I've just come across this thread, and having read through previous posts I note that there seems to have been some confusion with Cornelia Mayer and some other zither player I've never heard of. So, here is a video of Cornelia Mayer playing Anton Karas' "The Third Man" on his own zither which, so I believe, is now on display in the Anton Karas Museum. Cornelia is from Vienna, and her own zither is, like Karas's, tuned in Wiener Stimmung:

And here is a video of Wilfried Scharf, who (for me anyway) is the currently best and most versatile zither player, also playing "The Third Man".
