Hi Folks,
A reader of the web site shared these photos today. Timely, I think, given the recent discussion regarding piano bottom zithers made by Franz Schwarzer. This instrument has serial number 10242, which dates it to 1916. Specifically, it was offered as model 73C, the “C” being the designator for a zither with a piano bottom option. The catalog description for this model reads,
"Top veneered with especially prepared Rosewood Burl, sides veneered with genuine Rosewood; ivory celluloid edges and inlaid wood purflings; ebony finished pillar; Rosewood shell and scroll; patent aluminum string holder; finely engraved German silver patent head; in cloth covered, flannel lined wood case, with nickel-plated trimmings."
