Anton Kiendl Helmzither

Post by enslein »

This is one of my favorite instruments. It is built in 1843 in Vienna, the same year where Anton Kiendl opened his workshop there.
This Zither was made with three fretboardstrings, but later someone gave one more string on the same old Fretboard. Now the Zither has 18 strings.

The fretboard also was diatonic, but five missing tunes are supplemented. Now the Zither is partly cromatic.

This Zither has the same tuning like Johann Petzmayer plays on his Zither. Petzmayer produces missing frettboardtunes by bending the strings. But he was only able to play in four tonalities, for others he has to detune the Zither.

The strange hook behind the tuning pins is an historic fragment. It arises from the old zitherinstruments of tyrolien Mountain farmers.
When they dont play there instrument they hang it on the wall with this hook.
