Thanks Dave,
I gather you do not cut the string, bend the end down, and wind over the bent end to tune. This would leave the post with mostly black coils and a few bare metal coils. Did I interpret your response correctly?
Thanks,
henrylrjr

Re: Exploded view of the zither
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of making an ebony bridge but I got reccomendations, in an earlier post, that maple is stronger and less likely to break than ebony. I asked about ebony and the metal rod because I thought the ebony would be much less likely to break because of the metal rod. Any...

Re: Exploded view of the zither
Hi, Just a thought on bridge material. The violin family uses maple for the bridge and the strings are in direct contact with the maple. On the zither the bridge, at least mine and most I've seen, have a channel where a metal rod sits and the strings , under tension, push against the metal rod which...

string replacement
Hi all, I just opened 5 packages of Fisoma Munich tuning Griff strings and noticed that a4, a4 and D4 have a black covering, on the ends that go through the tuning posts, about 3 inches long. Are these black coated sections to be wound around the posts or do they have some other purpose? Also should...

Re: zither tuning pin engagement
Hi all, The repairs are done and its time to string it. I have a question about the tuning pins. How high above the top of the tuning block should they be before stringing. Asked another way, how much of the pin length should be engaged into the pin block after tuning is completed? I want enough eng...

zither bridge
Hi all I use titebond for my guitar work and plan to use it to glue on the ebony bridge I am making. I was just wondering if early zither makers used hide glue because that would influence how I remove the existing bridge. The original bridge has holes for the strings. I planned on tilting the milli...

Re: Exploded view of the zither
Dave thanks for the link to the numbered illustration. Rudi thanks for the info about the chamber. I don't think there would have been much, if any, sound propagation with out it. I have a question about the bridge I'm planning to make from ebony. In an earlier post I might have mentioned an idea wh...
