Gebrüder Kirchner Concert Zither

This early zither, made in Vienna by the Gebrüder Kirchner, has "F Holes" instead of the typical circular sound hole and decorative grill work on the front and back sides which serve as additional sound ports. The text inside the zither appears to read: "Gebruder Kirchner / Wien / NON...

Metronome App

Another useful app for smart phone users, by the same company that offers the "Cleartune" chromatic tuner.

Zither Play Day at the Vereinigung Erzgebirge

Attended the zither play day on Sunday, Oct., 16th, at the Vereinigung Erzgebirge in Warminster, PA. Six zither players were in attendance. As a starter, the group went through the pieces that will be played at Jane's upcoming seminar this Saturday. By far, "Schöffau, Napoleon: reiss aus!"...

Washburn Grand Concert Harp Zither - Model 55 and 56

I knew that Chicago based Lyon and Healy once manufactured and distributed zithers under their Washburn label, but I didn't realize how many unique models they offered. A Lyon and Healy catalog from 1889 offers 9 zither styles to choose from. The attached pic shows their Style 55, 34-string, Grand C...

Re: relative body thickness, förg vs schwarzer 10883

Rudy, Sasha Radicic in St Louis offered some very interesting insights. His response follows: In general, the thickness of the top, back, etc., is a very personal decision made by the luthier. It is very fine line, whether you are going to give an appropriate balance between the two, or not . It dep...

Zither ring "thorn"

Having accumulated several zither rings over the past few years, I've noticed that the length of the thorn (tip of the zither ring) on these seem to vary widely. See first photo and compare the thorn on the top two zither rings to that of the silver steel ring at the bottom. While wearing the silver...

Franz Schwarzer Concert Zither - Model 29

Mike Craven shared these photos and had a question regarding his Schwarzer zither: My Schwarzer concert zither is #10599. Are there any records that could tell me the date of manufacture? My grandmother bought it from a hobo that approached her door in Kingman, Arizona, about 1960. It sat in her clo...
