Does anyone out there have, or know of, any instructional materials for hackbrett? These would be for a young player with some German language exposure.

Rudi, You might try August Seith in Munich (seith-musikverlag@web.de). He has an incredible, vast catalog. His material is available through Thomi-Berg (thomi-berg@t-online.de) Mr. Berg is extremely helpful; you might try him as well. Best of luck. Dan

Re: Hackbrett instructional materials?
Rudi, I got to thinking: is the Hackbrett any different really than the hammered dulcimer? Mel Bay (melbay.com) has a lot of publications for the hammered dulcimer including instructional. Obviously, the specific German tunes would be different and would need to come from Germany.

Thanks Dan,
Jan L of the Wendlstoana says the dulcimers tend to be C/G instruments, while the Hackbrett is fully chromatic, all sharps and flats.
Hans T of the Carl Schurz society here does have a hackbrett instruction book. King Keyes would love it, as it starts out with practicing the scales, C, the G, and on, with simple folk songs to illustrate the scales. I should gain access to this book in the next several days.
I will start construction of another stand for Hackbrett for Hansi in the next few days.

Re: Hackbrett instructional materials?
Very interesting, Rudi. It seems the difference between the two is the tuning. I understood hammered dulcimer is tuned in circle of fifths; but it seems hackbrett is chromatic. Rather paradoxical since the circle of fifth tuning seems a German thing! Thanks for the info and I am glad you found a source for instructional material.

Thanks Dan,
Wikipedia has a nice comparison of the two (and several others) on "hammered dulcimer".

I think if you contact Dan Landrum at the Dulcimer Players News he can help you. Dan is a fabulous hammered dulcimer player and is very familiar with a wide variety of tuning sysytems that the instrument uses. If anyone would know about what available here, he would. Tell him that I sent you.
