I may be making a stop in Mittenwald, Germany during a trip to Germany next week. Do you know of any active zither makers there?

Zither makers in Mittenwald
I received the following question via email today. Can anyone assist?

Re: Zither makers in Mittenwald
I have been there this past October. Go to the "Geigenbau Museum" (http://www.geigenbaumuseum-mittenwald.de) - it's easy to find; follow the signs (everybody in town knows it)! Just across the street from the entrance is a zither maker. Sadly, I forgot his name. But if you ask at the museum entrance, you cannot go wrong!

Re: Zither makers in Mittenwald
Greetings Velocio,
Luthier Reinhard Hermann, a zither builder specialist in Wieland, Oberbayern, is a regular advertiser in the Journal MUSIK & TRADITION.* His ad reads
Reinhard Hermann
Zitherbau
Arion Zithern/ Arion Harfenzithern
nach Sysem Kerschensteiner
Raffele mit Kalvierboden
Kontragitarren
Fichtenstrasse 12 82407 Wielenbach
Telefon 0049 / 881 / 61970
www.kerschensteiner-zitherbau.de.
Wielenbach is about 4 km south of the southern tip of the Ammersee, southwest of Munich, just off of Bavarian state highway 2 (B2). B2 runs from Mittenwald west through Garmisch-Partenkirchen, heads north and just bypasses Oberammergau, past Murnau and Weilheim. Wielenbach is about 3-4 km north of Weilheim. The total distance is approximately 50-60 km.
Watch the weather; some areas of the Alps got 2 METERS of new snow this weekend.
You may also want to consider a visit to Andreas Waldschütz, just west of Miesbach. We described a visit to his shop elsewhere on this site. His site is www.der-geigenmacher.de .
Best to call ahead or contact through their websites for a definite reservation of time and date.

*MUSIK & TRADITION is a publication of the Bairisch-Alpenlänischen Volksmusikvereins e.V. , z.Hd. Manfred Wörnle, Am Lautersee 10, D-82481 Mittenwald, FAX 0049 8823 938 758. If you are in Mittenwald, Manfred may be another lead for details of Zither luthiers in the Mittenwald area. I am not certain how to convert German fax numbers to the US system, but you may want to try

Getting to Andreas Waldschutz's shop
First of all, thank you Velocio for the heads up on dialing in Germany; no wonder I keep losing coins in the pay-phones!
A question arose on how to get to Andreas Waldschütz's shop.
FROM MITTENWALD:
Andreas' shop is about 50-60 km from Mittenwald taking a very scenic route through the Walchensee and Teernsee lake areas. Scenic = very curvy alpine roads through beautiful forests with an occasional village and roadside chapels. Please check winter driving conditions before you start.
Take Bavarian route 2 (B2) about 4 km north of Mittenwald to intersection with B11
Take B11 about 25 km north to the intersection with B472
Take B472 about 25 km east (and through Bad Tölz) to Andreas' shop at
Thalmühl, which is a small farmer's lane leading to 3-4 buildings.
The picture is the view of Thalmühl from B472
"Thalmühl" is about 15 km east of Bad Tölz and 3 km west of Miesbach. Andreas' shop is around the back on the lower level. A GPS system with downloaded Bavarian or south German maps would be helpful.
If coming from Munich on autobahn A8,
Take exit/ausfahrt 97 at Holzkirchen
Take Bavarian highway B318 about 8 km south to the intersection with B472
Take B472 about 5 km east to Andreas' shop at Thalmühl
Andreas usually has 20-50 zithers in various states of repair and restoration, with many for sale, and a number of violins in various stages of new construction. He also has zither accessories, notes, and CD's of his group available. You might also be able to find out about local performances. Since Andreas' group is quite active, you would want to call (German) or e-mail (German or English??) ahead to ensure he's available at the date and time of your visit,

01149 170 206 7683 or 01149 802 528 1762 , from the States.
