buying zither from Germany ?

Hi all,
I am a newbee and already look ahead to buy a zither in Germany. I have friends & relatives who live there and travel to California (where I live) once a year. I also plan to travel to Europe by Summer 2014 and could pass by Germany to buy an used one (most likely).
My question is: if the instrument is hand carried back to US, is there any "tax" to be paid ?
I have carried instruments (less than 200$) back to US and no tax need to be paid.
