A reader of the web site, Jamie L., sent in this question regarding his grandfather's zither.

I was going through some of my grandparents things and found a Zither by Franz Schwarzer #4308. I was wondering if you could help me find out some information on it. It is in the original case, with extra strings in package, tuning instrument, really good condition.

Your Schwarzer, number 4308, is Prime model zither. The prominent arched top is representative of an older zither form. As for the line of Schwarzer zithers that was once available, this was one of the more affordable ones that a zither player could buy. The serial number dates it to 1891. Regardless of its initial cost, you can appreciate your zither as a family heirloom. That's where its real value lies.
