Scherz zither?

Post by Rudy Mueller »

What is a "Scherz Zither"? Is it different from the "concert zither"?

Hmm... maybe if the translation is taken literally it is a fake zither or otherwise a "joke" zither? That would be interesting to find out. Where did you hear of it?

The piece "Scherrzither-Stückle, D'r Alphirt Gorar"" is on the CD "Advents- und Weihnachssingen in den Bergen", a release of "da music/2840 Diepholz Germany", SONIA CD 77192.

It is track # 24 on the CD, and the musicians are listed as "Max Schraudorf, Scherrzither, Jutta und Ferdl Kerber, Gitarre und Bass".

Regrets for the initial mis-spelling; The correct form is SCHERRZITHER .

Speculating, the tone/quality seems to be similar to a small guitar, mandolin or even ukelele.

That's it!

Thank you Velocio x 10^6.

At the Wendlstoana/Milwaukee Christmas party last Sunday one group consisted of Hackbrett(dulcimer), Blockflötte(recorder), and Ukulele. My first impression was "that's different", but after the first few measures, the combination immediately brought the Scherrzither on the Advent CD to mind. The Ukulele player is an accomplished musician, and her instrument complimented the group well.

By the way, the german wikipedia even has a comprehensive entry for the Scherrzither:

The link you posted is extremely important to all those interested in the austro/germanic music and culture. I will add it to my favorites and "spread the word".
