Tip for installing strings

Post by DanSymonds »

When installing strings, an annoying problem is having the sting end slip off the end pin when bringing up to pitch. The string can lodge in the end bridge and be difficult to remove and sometimes causes damage. I have found a way around this: after putting the string loop on the pin, I apply a 5" hemostatic clamp. The string cannot pull off the pin. One has to be careful not to put too much pressure on the clamp, one notch should do, or the clamp will break. This clamp can be purchased on ebay for less than $10.

Great! I also keep one in both my fishing tackle and tool boxes. Great for removing hooks and handling small parts, and available at some hardware stores.

While having all of the strings off, I also clamp a leaf blower to the workbench, and blow out the interior of the sound box. Hold the instrument firmly; don't lose it! You will be surprised what comes flying out.
