Franz Schwarzer Zither Table

Post by Dave »

A reader of the web site, William S., sent in these photos of a zither table made by Franz Schwarzer in Washington, Missouri. Schwarzer's zither tables had a spruce top and bottom, with turned legs made of cherry wood. As with his zithers, Schwarzer placed a label inside the sound hole of his tables.

the square inserts are virtually identical to the unsigned table we received from "tante ella", who had lived in the st louis area for many years.

this table is in florida at the moment, and will end up with cousin hans mueller and wife peggy, probably this fall.

the table pictured here seems to have a rather "thin" (3-5 mm??) top. the table here in seminole has a mahogony (???) top approximately 10 mm, and a rather thin (1-2 mm? bottom, which is cracked. the similarities in inlay are remarkable. photos will be uploaded when we're back in grafton

on re-examining the "ella" table" with a woodworker here in georgia, we conclude the inlaid squares of the "ella" table are identical to those pictured here on the schwarzer table.
