Zitherist Henri Kublick

Post by Dave »

A big thank you to John Roeder for sharing these early images of Henri Kublick. The first image shows Henri Kublick and his ensemble performing at Chicago's "Bismarck Hotel." The last two images are from a brochure for Link's "Homestead Restaurant," located in Glenview, Illinois. John provided the following background information on these images:

"The images of Henri Kublick show his two early electric zithers. Rudy Wacek had told me that these zithers had electric "capacitor" pickups, which you can faintly see at the far right ends of the zither strings. The capacitor pickup consisted of metal contacts that vibrated with the frequency of the strings and converted the vibrations into electric signals by rapidly charging and discharging the electric current at the frequencies of the sounds. That is significantly different from the "magnetic" pickups used by Rudy Wacek and by all solid-body electric guitars.  The magnetic pickup, as you may know, produces a magnetic field in which the steel-core strings vibrate.  Those interruptions in the field are boosted and sent to the amplifier, usually through some equalizer.  The Link's brochure provides a brief bio of Kublick. It's also interesting to see the old pre-inflation prices in Link's menu. I estimate it was printed in the late 1930's."
