Munich VS Vienna

Post by maxwareham »

Hello!
I need to get a new set of strings for my zither (I don't play at all yet..)
Should I get Munich or Vienna? I really really like the playing of Anton Karas and believe he used Vienna tuning, but I can't seem to find any method books for the Vienna tuning. Do you know of any, or should I just go with Munich tuning? Or does it not even make much of a difference?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If you’re fortunate enough to meet up with a more experienced zither player here in US, that player will most likely be using Munich tuning. So, for the sole sake of your future instructor, I would suggest going with Munich tuning. My .02. ;-)

I agree with Dave. My mother-in-law's zither was tuned in Viennese, and I had it changed to Munich when I started. I know that Tomy Temerson says that he admires anyone that can play with the Viennese tuning... if you hear how Tomy plays... I can only imagine how difficult it would be to learn Viennese.

Stick with Munich ;)
