Washburn Grand Concert Harp Zither - Model 55 and 56

Post by Dave »

I knew that Chicago based Lyon and Healy once manufactured and distributed zithers under their Washburn label, but I didn't realize how many unique models they offered. A Lyon and Healy catalog from 1889 offers 9 zither styles to choose from. The attached pic shows their Style 55, 34-string, Grand Concert Harp Zither. This instrument originally sold for $150.00 and, for an additional $5, could be ordered with 6 strings on the fretboard!

Following is the catalog description for styles 55 and 56:

No. 55 - Selected Fancy Wood Top. Elaborately Inlaid with Pearl and Colored Celluloid around Sound-Hole. Handsome Pearl Inlaying around Edge of Top. Carved and Pearl Inlaid Column. Celluloid Bound Edges. Beautifully Engraved Patent Head. Plated Tuning Pins. Leather Covered Case, Velvet Lined, including all Necessary Tools, $150.00

No. 56 - Selected Fancy Wood Top, as desired, Elaborate Mother of Pearl Inlay around Sound-Hole and Edge of Top, Extra Pearl Figures Inlaid in Top, Scroll Work, Flowers, Birds, etc. Carved and Inlaid Column, Sides beautifully Inlaid, Edges bound with Pearl, Engraved and Gold Plated Patent Head, Gold Plated Tuning Pins, Embossed Leather-Covered Case, Rich Velvet Lining, including tools for Stringing, Tuning and Cleaning. An Elaborate Instrument in Every Particular, $200.00
