Re: new strings

Ken, may I ask how you are getting on with the Lenzner strings? I've only ever used one (in an emergency) and would be interested to learn what others think of them in comparison with Optima/Bergfee and Pyramid.

Re: Zither for D

A lot of Austrian and Schrammel music is written in the key of D. That make for quite a reach for the E chord, and occasional B and Fis chords. Austrian (Schrammel) music was written for zithers in Wiener Stimmung. In any case, I have no perfecta zither, I don't have large hands, or particularly lo...

Re: Listening recommendations?

I'm amazed watching Cornelias left hand; that is some complicated finger work. The complicated fingerwork is presumably due to the Wiener tuning, which is different from the (now more commonly used) Munich tuning with the fingerboard strings being a / a / d / g / c. The Wiener tuning fingerboard st...

Re: Listening recommendations?

I've just come across this thread, and having read through previous posts I note that there seems to have been some confusion with Cornelia Mayer and some other zither player I've never heard of. So, here is a video of Cornelia Mayer playing Anton Karas' "The Third Man" on his own zither w...

Re: Practice Video - Volkstümliche Zitherschule p31 - Der erste Tanz

The mentioned groove on the bridge goes back to the A. Darr book that told you to rest the little finger there. That approach was discarded by the end of the 19th century. Ken Bloom http://www.boweddulcimer.org Where I come from (Munich), resting the little finger in the groove of one's (concert) z...

Re: Practice Video - Volkstümliche Zitherschule p31 - Der erste Tanz

The little finger - in general - ought to be kept straight, not curled. Some players keep theirs parallel with the ring finger and others away from it. In any case, the purpose of the little finger is not to help to push away the string on which the finger rests after the stroke, but to be used when...

Re: Practice Video - Volkstümliche Zitherschule p31 - Der erste Tanz

Andy, the position of the little finger in your latest photo looks good, and I am glad to read that you notice the difference it makes to the mobility of your other fingers. Had to laugh about your drinking tea with the Queen comment - the little finger of my right hand is sticking out like that eve...

Re: Practice Video - Volkstümliche Zitherschule p31 - Der erste Tanz

Very nicely played, Andy, just as written, including the fingering. Re the little finger of your right hand - it would probably be better uncurled, and the longer you leave it as is, the more difficult it will be to correct. Whether you then keep it parallel with the bass finger or away from it is a...

Re: Tuning Buttons

Welcome! I suggest that you try http://www.zithers-usa.com/Suppliers.html You mention the stress of tuning - the tuning buttons should turn effortlessly. If not, it may perhaps be worthwhile having a look at the tuning machine/mechanic itself, as it might require cleaning and oiling (or replacement ...

Re: Perfekta Zither/Anton Brauer

Hi Quince My pleasure! Glad to know that you found the information useful. I don't think that your question as to how your zither ended up with a house clearance company in the UK can ever be answered. As you will know, zithers are however occasionally being offered for sale in the UK, so there must...
