Re: Forum and Website Moving

Hi Folks, Welcome to the new Forum! It has now been upgraded to the latest version of phpBB. There will likely be some glitches, but I believe all posts were moved over successfully. I will be performing some additional customizations in the coming days. Please become acquainted with the new format,...

Forum and Website Moving

Hi Folks, Due to recent issues with my current hosting provider, I have begun the process of migrating the forum and website. I'm sending this as an FYI, to explain any outages in advance, and all relevant updates will be posted to this thread. Thank you everyone for your continued support of the fo...

Re: Next video!

Hi Tom, Nice to hear you were in touch with Jane Curtis. You had the good fortune of speaking to, in my opinion, the most knowledgeable zither player in the US. You can not go wrong in seeking her advice. Regarding your latest video, that’s a definite improvement! The tone has improved, with less no...

Re: Right hand position

Hi Pete, thank you very much, and also thanks for your video and plug for the forum and website — I’ve linked to it on the Facebook page. Looking forward to more videos of your progress. You will get there, it just takes time. Just a another note on the right hand position. Early zither tutorials in...

Re: Right hand position

Thanks Tom! Playing with the right hand off the bridge is a more advanced technique. Say, for example, when a piece requires a more mellow tone, the right hand can be shifted closer to the sound hole of the instrument to achieve this. For the most part, however, the bridge is your anchor point when ...

Re: Instant Calluses!!!

Tom, those are excellent points. Speaking of repairs, there’s a zither player in the Philadelphia area who visits a nail salon. He enters and requests “one nail.” Some zither pieces call for more ornamentation, such as slides executed with the left thumb. Over time this will wear down and create gro...

Re: Right hand position

Moving the right hand off the bridge to play the open strings is an advanced technique. The general effect is a more mellow tone as you approach the sound hole of the instrument. Your home plate though, so to speak, is the bridge of the instrument. Last evening, I put together a short video on the r...

Re: Next video!

Hi Tom, having had the benefit of an instructor, I never actually worked through these A. Darr exercises - I was given simple songs and exercises taken from here and there when I was just beginning. Anyway, thanks for sharing your videos (You too Andy!). Here’s my take on A. Darr No. 1. Maybe I will...

Re: Next video!

Hi Tom, thanks for the video. As you work through these exercises, I would not be overly concerned about whether you’re looking at the strings or not. Focus instead on improving tone by eliminating the “buzzing” you’re getting from the bass and accompaniment strings. After your G bass, rest your 4th...

Re: Progress Video - Volkstümliche Zitherschule p23

Bravo, Andy! Comparing this video with the one you posted a few months ago, there is great improvement. You’re putting in the hours and it shows!
